The art of being a leader – part 1

in Personal

A few days ago I had a very interesting conversation with a person I respect very much. Although it wasn’t about personal experiences (don’t I need that…), the conversation was enlightening and gave me a new perspective on values in life, on the things I strongly believe in and actions I should carry on taking. Of course, it takes more than a conversation to change your life around, but one should always learn from other people’s experiences and listen to their opinions. Wrong or right as people may be, they always have something to teach.

Part of the conversation was about the art of being a leader and natural ways of showing respect in the process of leadership. Naturally, we started talking about the company I have been running for quite some time now. I have had discussions about how to run a company in general, and about how to run mine in particular, with as many people as I could.

I started my company 8 years ago, and it took a long time until I could see it working properly. I was always to blame for its failures (at least according to my own theories I am smart enough as to blame only myself not the others for failures) and it was really hard to motivate people to work versus have the same fun I would have liked to have working for an employer.

I’ve managed to do a good job so far. I have only one thing to add to the above: the more you work with people, the more you realize success is coming, the more you become powerful and you get into money, the more you should realize you are only another employee of your own company. If you decide to start a business, don’t think that there is a great job called BOSS that you are going to have for the rest of your life. No. If you are a fair, honest, hard-working and intelligent person you realize you are as much of an employee of your company as any other. In fact, the more authority you get, the humbler you should be.

I AM NOT A FAN OF ADOLF HITLER, AND I WILL PROBABLY NEVER BECOME ONE. But we should learn from everyone, and Hitler said something I totally agree with.

During one of the Reich meetings with his subordinates (Bormann taking notes), Hitler said something like: frankly speaking and leaving aside any sentimentalism, I have to admit that my weakness for Italy and for the Duke especially is one of the mistakes you should add to my list of personal mistakes.

This happened some time in 43-44, so no long before der untergang.

What is the connection between what Hitler said to his subordinates and the way someone should run a company?

Simple. Strong and intelligent people show their superiority the second they admit they make mistakes and are ready to serve. The second you take on the tough job of being a leader, you know you have to serve. People and ideals. We are all subjects to higher causes and ideals if we choose this path in life. Otherwise, we just sit on the side and we make funny comments about how others know or don’t know how to run businesses, lives and families.

My professional goal is to have a healthy, balanced, serious, reliable, profitable and enjoyable business in today’s Romania. And, God, I am proud of what we have achieved!

I am the son
and the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way
I am Human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

I am the son
and the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and the heir
Of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way
I am Human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

There’s a club, if you’d like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go, and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home
And you cry
And you want to die

When you say it’s gonna happen now,
Well, when exactly do you mean?
See I’ve already waited too long
And all my hope is gone

I am Human And I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does
